Making some snaps of seniors in cheer, on the football team, and in band at the last home football game is always a highlight of the fall semester.  This year it was a little different.

Tami Strege addressed the band on Day 1 of band camp.

2014 brings both familiar and new faces to new roles at WHS and the Purple Pride Marching Band.

An hour into the first afternoon of band camp, the Purple Pride Marching Machine received a visit from the new Commander and Chief of WHS, Tami Strege.  Strege addressed the band as the Principal for Washington High School and as a former band geek.  Strege played the trumpet in her high school marching band in Minot, North Dakota.

The Purple Pride bringin' it @ the 2013 ASU Band Day. Click the image to see more snaps from the day.

Band Day @ ASU was pretty chill this year.  We were not too early in the program that we had to be up at the crack of dawn, but we were early enough that we could go to Arizona Mills for lunch and spend the middle of the day indoors.  Nice call, McG!

It was early.  4:30 A.M call time.  Cold.  Ok.  A cool 54 degrees.

Coffee was out of the question because the band was in uniform.  So when the bus didn’t show, we walked, which made it not so cold and a little less early feeling.  The ABC/Fry’s crew was pretty chill.  Fry’s presented WHS Instrumental Music Director Eileen McGonigal with a $100 gift card for the band, which will come in handy this summer for band camp.  ABC featured the band four or five times when the feed was live from Fry’s.

The annual Northwest Regional music event is a Ram Fan highlight of the year.  It generally means a trip out of town, a day way from school/work (Friday), interesting clinicians, new restaurants, too much fast food, starbucks every morning, lots of rehearsal time, snaps, and three excellent concerts on Saturday afternoon: choir, orchestra, and band.  This year’s event met all expectations.

The 2010 seniors had their night on Friday at the home game against Greenway.  In a word, it was a great game.  The RAMS found themselves tied with Greenway at 13 going into the locker room at halftime.  The 26-23 final made for an exciting second half.

Some critical turnovers and excellent management of the clock by the RAMS coaching staff allowed the RAMS to hang on for the win and end the season at nine and one.  Nice!  Check out the snaps here.

Agua Fria Competition

This year’s 2009 Auga Fria marching competition was….. interesting for the Purple Pride.  By far-and-away the best show on the field all year.  But, this year’s personal-best performance by the Purple Pride was juuuust not good enough to make the cut for State.

The annual Glendale Community College GUHSD marching band exhibition is always a great opportunity to get some back-field snaps of the drum majors.  Since it is not a judged event, the atmosphere is always fun and the bands get into the groove of the night.  Juan Carlos Mateo Meza and Brittany Marshall led the Purple Pride through their Pirates of the Caribbean show without a hitch.

The annual pilgrimage to Flagstaff for regional auditions is always an anticipated event.  This year was no different.  Three buses.  Two schools (WHS and Slope).  A bunch of nervous musicians.  It was a great time!   There is a collection of photographs from the trip.

I’m bummed about the photos from the UofA Band Day today.  I just wasn’t on my game this morning and I really botched up a bunch.  Out of 258 snaps, there were 48 good ones.  I really wanted to get some good shots of Valerie Lynn Rogers too, but you can only do so much from the stands.  And, there won’t be a next year for her. Sorry Valerie! It is an awesome legacy that the last three drum majors for the Pride of Arizona have been former drum majors of the WHS Purple Pride. Could there be a four-peat?

Purple Pride, you guys played well this morning.  I was impressed with how you were able to get into the zone.  I’m really looking forward to the next couple of shows.
